 Riverland sunshine comes in many forms. Nearly half of Australia’s wine grape yield ripens on these broadacre vineyards. Citrus, stonefruit and nuts thrive in Riverland orchards and dried and glazed fruit can be bought at roadside stalls and other outlets. Ruston’s Roses located in Renmark is the largest rose nursery this side of the planet, with 50,000 rose bushes. (Closed July through September) There are a great number of excellent sports facilities across the region. On sunny winter days golfers head for any of five first-class golf courses - at Berri, Renmark, Barmera, Waikerie and Loxton. Nature in its original state can be found in the region’s numerous conservation areas, notably the Bookmark Biosphere Reserve. At Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre, wander out to the viewing platform, tasting glass in hand and gaze over their managed wetlands. See the river from a different angle aboard the PS Industry, a floating museum or, for a taste of local history, visit Loxton Historical Village, complete with schoolhouse, bakery, blacksmith’s and bank. The massive timber wharf at the Port of Morgan dates from the heyday of riverboat trading. Be sure to visit Olivewood Homestead where irrigation pioneers, the Chaffey brothers once lived and another must-see is the Overland Corner Hotel (est.1859) which was once a major staging post for drovers. Today it’s a National Trust property - with a working front bar, so visitors can order a schooner.
